JU correspondent :
After around one and a half year of closure, the authorities of Jahangirnagar University reopened its dormitories on October 11 and resumed blended learning system (both online and in-person classes) from October 21. But the students are facing difficulties to perform online academic activities as the internet service in the campus is exasperating.
Sources within Information and Communication Technology Cell (ICT cell) of the university which looks after the internet service of the campus told that a meeting was held demanding to reopen of the dormitories to provide free internet service at the dormitories. But after around 2 months of reopening, they are yet to avail the facilities.
The JU students demand installation of the service without any dilemma.
Fahmida Shanta, a resident of Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Muzib Hall of the university said, we are facing a lot of problems to perform the online academic activities assigned by our teachers. We use broadband internet of a local ISP but we have to buy data pack from the mobile operator. Both of the services is very poor in condition.
“I would like to request the university authority to provide free internet service in the dormitories very soon”, she added. Another student of the university and a resident of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall, Enayetur Rahman echoed the same. He said, sometimes we cannot attend online classes properly.
Meanwhile, Rakibul Rony, President of JU Chatra Union said, the commercial internet service providers are charging extra money from the students where they seemed to get free internet service from the university. As the university is conducting both online and on-site classes, they should provide high speed internet in a cost free manner.
But the respective authority of the university seems busy with throwing mud.
When contacted, acting teacher of the university’s ICT cell, Prof Sharif Uddin said, we are providing broad-band internet service in all the offices, the departments, office room of the hall provosts’, even in the teachers quarter. We have two resources of broad-band internet service; BTCL and BdREN.
We urged the university authority hall provosts to give some equipment like routers and cables to install free internet service in the dormitories. We are yet to get their response.
However, the hall provosts are claiming that it is not so easy task to accomplish. Professor Mohd. Muzibur Rahman, Provost of Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall and Chief of the Provosts’ Committee claimed ICT cell’s statement as an empty speech. He said, we are facing many complexities in ICT cell’s regular internet service. We are thinking about the issue so that our students don’t face any problem in this regard. We will consider their proposal but it is not possible now.
