Students of Geography and Environment Science Department of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Saturday kept their department under lock and key, demanding withdrawal of a writ against their honours final examination by a teacher. At about 11:00am, the students confined accused teacher Professor Monzurul Hasan in his room to press home their demand.
The students kept the professor confined until he (Prof Monzur) assured them of creating not obstacle to holding of
examination after intervened by JU Proctor Professor Tapan Kumar Shaha and the Chairman of the department Professor Monzurul Haque at 5:00pm.
Sources said, on February 17, Prof Monjurul Hasan, the former head of the examination committee, filed a writ petition with high court against reforming the examination committee from which he (Prof Monjur) was excluded for his failure to arrange examination for one year.
The students earlier staged a series of demonstrations here on the campus and urged the teacher to withdraw the writ in the interest of students, but he didn’t pay head, students said.
The final year examination of that department has been halted as the new examination committee couldn’t function.
The new committee was formed as per the decision of the departmental academic committee meeting held on September 01, 2013.
Earlier on December 17, 2013, Prof Monjurul Hasan also filed another writ petition on the same issue which was rejected by another High Court bench.
Alamgir Hossain Shyamol, a final year student of the department said, due to obstinacy of the teacher, we have lost one academic year and we are frustrated.
Prof Monjurul Hasan said, “The former committee has been reformed breaking university act. I have asked a solution only.
Replying to another question he said, “I don’t know anything about this. I haven’t filed writ petition against the students.”
