JU Correspondent :The authorities of Jahangirnagar University (JU) have expelled five students also activists of university unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) for the lifetime over sexually harassing a female student on the day of Pahela Baishakh this year.Abu Bakar Siddique, JU registrar confirmed to this correspondent on Saturday night. The decision of expulsion came from a syndicate meeting at around 9:00 pm following the recommendation of Anti-Sexual harassment cell with the chair of Prof.Farzana Islam, VC of JU. The expelled are Nishat Islam Bijoy, executive member of the JU unit BCL also a 3rd year student of the Journalism and Media Studies (JMS) department, Nafis Iqbal, publicity secretary of the JU unit BCL and a 3rd year student of the Chemistry department, Rakib Hasan, 2nd year student of the Geography and Environment department, Nurul Kabir and Abdur Rahman Ifti, 2nd year student of Anthropology department. Earlier, the authority also expelled eight students temporarily and JU unit Chhatra League expelled five leaders and activists for their alleged involvement in the incident.On April 16, a female student of JU was sexually harassed by some BCL activists while returning to her dormitory after celebrating the Bangla New Year in the evening.The victim submitted a written complaint to the JU Vice Chancellor and proctor in this regard on Meantime the students under the banner of “Nipironer Birruddha Jahangirnagar” who had been demonstrating since April 17 and brought out a victory procession on the campus after hearing the news.
