The 14th session of the 10th Jatiya Sangsad [JS], the first session of the year which is also called winter session, begins today [Sunday] at 4:00 pm.
President Abdul Hamid had convened the session of the National Parliament in line with the Article 72 [A] of the Constitution.
Before starting the session, a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee of the Parliament will sit in a meeting presided over by Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at 3 pm today to fix the duration as well as the working days of the session.
Prime Minister and Leader of the House Sheikh Hasina will also attend the meeting, among others.
As per Parliament procedures, the President will deliver speech on the first working day.
The speech has already been endorsed in the Cabinet meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. The President in his speech will focus on the government’s different development activities.
Later, a general discussion will be held on the President’s speech in the House.
Officials said the session would be a long one as the lawmakers would speak on the thanksgiving motion on President’s speech.
Apart from the general discussion, a number of bills are likely to be passed during the session.
The JS will also adopt an obituary reference over the death of Gaibandha-4 MP Manjurul Islam Liton, who was gunned down at his home on December 31. The first day’s business of the JS would be adjourned after taking the resolution on it.
According to the Constitution, there can be a maximum of 60 days’ gap between the end of a session and the beginning of the next one.
The last 13th session of Parliament was prorogued on December 8 last year having only 5 sittings. In that session, out of nine bills, five were passed. Some 50 bills were passed during the five sessions last year.
