The parliamentary standing committee (JS body) on Home Affairs has directed the concerned ministry to immediately unearth the mystery behind the recent murder of blogger and writer Avijit Roy. The JS body also sought an explanation over the police silence during the attack on Avijit Roy.
A meeting of the parliamentary standing committee was held at the National Parliament in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Sunday chaired by committee’s president Tipu Munshi.
State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Md Mozammel Hossain, Advocate Shamsul Haque Tuku, Abul Kalam Azad, Abu Seyed Al Mahmud Swapan, Fakhrul Imam and Kamrunnahar Chowchudhury, among others, were present in the meeting.
Monirul Islam, Joint-Commissioner, DB of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said on Sunday: “Even, Shafiur Rahman Farabi, the prime suspect in the murder case, who was put on remands twice each for 10 days, did not provide any clue to the investigation team.”
Farabi denied his involvement in the murder, the DB man said.
The investigators suspected of Chhatra Shibir leader and also the leader of Ansarullah Bangla Team Redwanul Azad Rana but they have failed to trace him even after declaring a bounty of Tk 5 lakh, he said. “The DB is now investigating the murder case with the US-based investigating agency Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Members of both the investigation agencies have had a number of meetings but they have not been able to make any headway in the murder case,” Monirul Islam added.
Prof Ajoy Roy, father of slain blogger Avijit Roy expressed his suspicion on February 13 that Tariq Farseem Mannan, a teacher of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), might have had his hand in the murder, sources said.
