JS body for updating existing laws for proper running of river ports

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Shipping Ministry recommended taking necessary measures for updating existing laws to run the river ports properly.
The recommendation was made on Tuesday at the 19th meeting of the committee at the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Bhaban with its Chairman Maj (Retd) Rafiqul Islam presiding.
Committee members Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, Talukder Abdul Khaleque, M Abdul Hai, M Nurul Islam Sujan, M Habibur Rahman, M Abdul Latif, Ranajit Kumar Roy, M Anwarul Azim and Mamtaz Begum Advocate attended the meeting, said an official release.
The meeting suggested the shipping ministry to keep six dredgers deployed round the clock for maintaining full navigability of Mongla-Ghoshiakhali channel.
It also recommended taking steps to procure a new dredger to continue dredging activities at Chittagong seaport.
The meeting was informed that Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) evicted 4,000 illegal structures from riversides and recovered 217 acres of land from the grab of illegal occupants.
Senior officials concerns were present at the meeting.
