JS body for master plan to modernize Mongla Port

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Shipping Ministry recommended undertaking a master plan for the development and modernization of Mongla Seaport.
 The recommendation was made on Wednesday at the 4th meeting of the committee at the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Bhaban with its Chairman Maj (Retd) Rafiqul Islam presiding. Committee members Talukder Abdul Khaleque, M. Abdul Hai, M. Habibur Rahman, Ranajit Kumar Roy, M. Anwarul Azim and Mamtaz Begum attended the meeting, said an official release. The meeting also suggested building a highway and an airport in Mongla.
It held detailed discussions on the overall activities of Paira Port Authority. The JS body suggested formation of a joint committee of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) and Bangladesh Water Development Board taking approval of the Prime Minister for coordination between the activities of the two agencies.
It recommended introducing a dedicated ferry service on Mawa- Kaorakandi route for the transportation of garment materials.
The meeting suggested making all land ports functional and filling up vacant posts in Mongla Seaport.
Shipping secretary and other senior officials concerned were present at the meeting.
