The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry on Monday expressed concern over anomalies and corruption in the management of Biman Bangladesh, as well as involvement of its staff in gold smuggling.
The parliamentary watchdog raised the concern at its 7th meeting,
held at Jatiya Sangsad with its chairman Muhammad Faruk Khan in the chair.
The committee will make specific suggestions regarding mismanagement of Biman in its next meeting, after getting a report from the probe body formed by the ministry to investigate involvement of Biman staff in gold smuggling to India, that has shot up alarmingly since mid-2013.
The parliamentary body suggested the national carrier increase the number of domestic flights it operates, alongside improving its services with a view to surviving in the rapidly evolving aviation industry.
Committee members Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon, Prof Ali Ashraf, Tanveer Imam, Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, Kamrul Asraf Khan, Aftab Uddin Sarkar, Rowshan Ara Mannan and Sabiha Nahar attended the meeting.
