Announcing that his party will not take part in the next general election with alliance, Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Sunday said the 11th parliamentary elections may be the last ones of his life. Speaking at a public rally, he also said taking Jatiya Party to power is his last desire. “I’ve reached the end of my life. It (11th parliamentary elections) may be the last election of my life.
I want to stay with you. If you want to keep me alive, you must bring Jatiya Party to power,” he told his leaders and activists. Jatiya Party arranged the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city, marking its 31st founding anniversary.
Ershad said, his party suffered huge losses and got poorer number of seats by participating in the 8th, 9th and 10th parliamentary elections with alliance. “We got many seats joining election independently while we got affected by doing it with alliance. We don’t want to be loser any more and we’ll take party in the election independently.” He also directed his party men to get ready for participating in the next polls independently and ensure its candidates’ victory.
Ershad, a former military ruler, said Jatiya Party will introduce provincial government system on priority basis if it is voted to power as the people have got fed up with the current governing system. He also said his party will also change the current election system and empower upazila chairmen by introducing a full-fledged upazila system. The Jatiya Party chief also said his party will also ensure justice, increase power generation, create new jobs and ensure security of all communities, including minorities, if it returns to power.
