JP candidate leading in RCC poll

The Jatiya Party’s mayoral aspirant in Rangpur City Corporation election is far ahead of the rivals in the early counting of ballots after peaceful voting.
The results of 124 out of 193 polling stations were obtained until 10pm on Thursday.
Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa with the Jatiya Party symbol ‘plough’ bagged 107,763 votes in these centres.
His nearest rival the ruling Awami League’s
Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu, who is seeking a re-election with ‘boat’ symbol, pulled 40,907 votes.
The BNP candidate, Kawsar Zaman Babla, whose electoral symbol is ‘paddy sheaf’, drew 20,607.
The results are being announced from the control room set up in the city’s Police Community Hall.
Besides the seven mayoral candidates, 211 candidates are vying for 33 posts of general ward councillors while 65 will fight for posts of councillors in 11 reserved wards.
The city has a total 393,894 voters – 196,256 male and 197,638 female.
Returning Officer Subhash Chandra Sarker said the turnout was 46 percent until 1:30pm. He expected the total turnout to be around 70 percent. The voting ended at 4pm, with no reports of violence. The voters praised the balloting as ‘unprecedentedly peaceful’. Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda said at a news briefing in Dhaka that the commission was ‘satisfied’ as the voting was ‘fair and festive’.
