Staff Reporter :
It could be a day of joy for Babul Sikder, 17 and for his family on Wednesday. All of them were eagerly waiting for Babul’s result of secondary school certificate [SSC] since early morning.
Babul himself was confident that his result would be good enough to celebrate the event with his dear and near ones by eating sweetmeat. So, smile was on his lips and smile was on his face!
To pass the time before publication of result, he went to a nearby playground to play cricket with his friends at about 10:00am. But it turned to be his last match. He did not return from the playing field. Rather, his body was brought to their house at Janata Housing Society of Barabagh in Mirpur.
The ill-fated boy Babul, son of Mostafa Sikder, was killed in a clash over playing cricket, not by the criminals but by his friends.
“Babul was beaten with cricket stump during a quarrel over playing cricket at Dhankhet ground in the area. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead,” Aklima Khatun, Sub-Inspector of Mirpur Police Station, said.
Police said Babul received fatal injuries when his friends hit him severely in the head and other parts of the body with cricket stumps at one stage of their altercation.
In the meantime, the SSC result was published and Babul got GPA-5. Seeing the result, the parents of victim became almost mad. “What will I do with the GPA-5? My son is no more. I don’t need the result,” the wailing father Mostafa Sikder said.
Sub Inspector of Mirpur Police Station Md Shahjahan said that police recovered the victim’s body from hospital getting information from local sources. “We’ve sent the body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for post mortem.”
A case was filed with the concerned police station in this connection. Police arrested three friends of Babul on suspicion of their involvement in the murder.
