The High Court on Tuesday observed that ‘Joy Bangla’ should be used as the national slogan at all state programmes from December 16.
The HC bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the observation while holding hearing on a writ petition filed in this regard.
The court, however, fixed January 14, 2020, for further hearing on the rule issued earlier by another HC bench.
Advocate Bashir Ahmed appeared in the court on behalf of the writ petition while attorney general Mahbubey Alam and deputy attorney general ABM Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar stood for the state. During the hearing, the court also heard Senior Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Barrister Shafiq Ahmed, Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru and Supreme Court Bar Association President AM Amin Uddin.
In a briefing, Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun said, “Joy Bangla’ was the main slogan of our Liberation War. The freedom fighters appeared in the war chanting this slogan. We hope this slogan should be used as our national slogan by incorporating in the Constitution. Many countries have their national slogan. So, we prayed to the court to recognize ‘Joy Bangla’ as national slogan.”
Advocate AM Amin Uddin said, “Our Constitution incorporated the March 7 speech of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The last part of that speech is ‘Joy Bangla’. As per our Constitution ‘Joy Bangla’ is a part the Constitution. So, this slogan should be declared as national slogan.”
Writ petitioner lawyer Advocate Bashir Ahmed said, “I prayed to the court to give direction to all the officials of the republic so that they say ‘Joy Bangla’ after their speech and oath and also sought direction upon the every educational institutions to end their assembly class with the slogan as it was the inspiration of our Liberation War.”
Advocate Bashir Ahmed filed the writ petition with the High Court in 2017 seeking its order to declare ‘Joy Bangla’ as the national slogan.
