Sub-Inspector (SI) Kalam of Lalbagh Police Station has been closed on allegation of beating up journalists in the capital’s Azimpur area early Sunday.
Journalists Kazi Mobarak Hossain and Fakhrul Islam Shahin were returning from a wedding ceremony after midnight on Saturday. When they reached near their homes, an Officer-in-Charge, a Sub-Inspector and a Constable intercepted them and tried to pick them up to a police vehicle. As they denied getting up the vehicle, the police reportedly beat and threatened to implicate them in a yaba case, the journos alleged.
Later, SI Kalam of Lalbagh Police Station was initially closed around 2:30am.
Kazi Mobarak Hossain said that Aslam, OC operation of Lalbagh Zone, beat journalist Fakhrul Islam who was accompanied by me. When I protested, he grabbed the collar of my shirt and tried to pick me up on their vehicle.
But they could not do so facing protest from other journalists who were present on the spot.
KM Ashraf, Officer-in-Charge of Lalbagh Police Station, said that they have received the message. SI Kalam has been closed and further action will be taken after investigation.
