Journo Kajol gets bail in one case

The High Court on Tuesday granted bail to photojournalist Shafiqul Islam Kajol in a case filed under the Digital Security Act by Saifuzzaman Shikhor, a ruling party lawmaker from Magura-1, with Sher-E-Bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka on March 9 this year.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order after hearing on his bail petition.
Earlier on October 19 this year, the court issued a ruleasking the authorities concerned of the government to explain in two weeks as to why photojournalist Shafiqul Islam Kajol should not be granted bail in the case.
After holding hearing on the rule, the court on Tuesday declared the rule absolute.
Lawyers Jyotirmoy Barua, Fuad Hasan and Ripon Kumar Barua appeared for Kajol, while Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappi represented the state during hearing of the bail petition.
Jyotirmoy Barua told the reporters that Kajol is accused in three cases and he is yet to get bail in two other cases. As a result, he cannot get release right now, added the lawyer.
Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappi said, “The investigation officers of the two other cases came to the High Court on Tuesday and they placed their explanation. The court issued rule over his bail in these two cases also and fixed December 15 for hearing.”
Two more cases were filed against Kajol under the same act with Hazaribagh and Kamrangirchar police stations on March 10 and 11 respectively.
Fifty-three days into his disappearance, Kajol was found by Border Guard Bangladesh in Benapole on May 3 this year.
He was produced in the court on June 23 in the case filed with the Sher-E-Bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka, but the court rejected his bail petition.
Then he moved to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka and this court also rejected his petition on August 24.
Finally he moved to the High Court on September 8. After primary hearing the High Court on October 19 issued a rule over his bail. Upon hearing the rule the High Court on Tuesday declared the rule absolute.
