Call to form independent broadcast commission

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Arefin Siddique called for forming an independent broadcast commission to formulate and implement an acceptable broadcast policy.
He made the call on Saturday while speaking as chief guest at a seminar on ‘National Broadcast Policy: Our Thoughts,’ organized by DU Journalism and Mass Communication Alumni Association at Prof Mozaffar Ahmed Chowdhury auditorium in Science Building of the university.
Presided over by Alumni Association President M Alamgir Hossain, the seminar was also addressed among others by Prof Sheikh Abdus Salam, Prof Sheikh Shakhawat Ali Khan, Prof Dr AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, BFUJ President Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul and former secretary of government Abu Alam Shahid Khan. Journalism and Mass Communication Professor Mafizur Rahman moderated the seminar
The DU vice-chancellor said the freedom of media is related with its responsibilities.
While enjoying the freedom, the mass media would have to be careful about objectivity and authenticity of news, he added.
He suggested formation of an independent broadcast policy comprising professionals, academics, businessmen and representatives of other professions and sections of society.
He said the government has taken the initiative to form a broadcast policy to uphold the people’s right to get right information.
The speakers said a policy is needed for mass media with reasonable restrictions to stop yellow journalism and bring the media under a framework.
