Bagharpara police detained a journalist based on a silly matter on Monday.
Police detained Iqbal Kabir, President Bagharpara Press Club and also staff correspondent; Jashore -based Daily Spondon, owned by lawmaker for Jashore- 1 constituency Sheikh Afil Uddin, from a meeting regarding maintenance of law and order situation during the forthcoming Durga Puja on Monday noon and kept the office of detective branch (DB) overnight and then produced before the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Gautam Mollick on Tuesday noon, said journalists, police and court sources.
The court sent Iqbal to Jashore Central Jail as he was produced before the court at around 12:30pm on Tuesday, court inspector Rokhsana Khatun said. Iqbal told newsmen that he was detained in a fabricated case after calling him around 10 minutes before the starting of the meeting on the Bagharpara police station compound on Monday. Chandan Das, General Secretary, Bagharpara Press Club told newsmen that Iqbal, who is president of the press club, was detained by the police as he made an obscene word as part of gossiping to a policeman who was well known to the journalist. Galam Rabbani, additional superintendent of police and also the chief guest of the programme took it seriously. Court sources said sub inspector Liton Kumar Mondol filed the case against Iqbal Kabir under section 353/332/333/295 Ka/506 PC.
Mizanur Rahman Moon, chief correspondent, Daily Spondon told that some corrupt government officials and politicians were angry with Iqbal for his objective reporting.
