Veteran journalist M Bashir Ahmed, senior member of Dhaka Reporters’ Unity, passed away in Mirpur on Thursday night.
He was 75. Bashir Ahmed, suffering from old age complications, fell sick at his residence in Mirpur around 8:45pm. He was taken to a local hospital where doctors pronounced
him dead, said a DRU press release. His namaz-e-janaza was held after the Juma prayer before he was laid to rest at the Kalshi graveyard. Bashir Ahmed started his career with Dainik Azad newspaper in the ’80s and later worked as chief crimes reporter at Dainik Samachar and Dainik Sangbad.
“He was one of the top crime reporters in Bangladesh,” said Jahangir Alam, former vice-president of Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB). “He was uncompromising when it came to reporting.”
CRAB President Abul Khayer mourned the senior journalist’s death. “He was a thorough professional, who worked with honesty and integrity,” Khayer told UNB.
DRU President Elias Hossain and General Secretary Kabir Ahmed Khan expressed deep shock at the demise of the veteran reporter.
They prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the members of the bereaved family. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
Late Bashir Ahmed’s qulkhawani and Doa Mahfil will be held at the Sangbadik Housing Society Mosque after Asr prayer on Wednesday.
