Workshop on safety food: Journalists can play vital role against food adulteration

A workshop on ” Role of Media in Food Safety & Ensuring Rights of Consumers” was held at Chittagong circuit house auditorium on Monday last. Bangladesh Food Safety Network(BFSN) and Consumers Association of Bangladesh)CAB), Chittagong chapter jointly organized the workshop.
 Netherland Govt, FAO and USAID provided technical support as program partners. Chittagong based journalists of local and national dailies participated the workshop. Deputy commissioner of Chittagong Mezhabuddin attended the workshop as Chief Guest duly presided by SM Nazer Hossain , President of CAB, Chittagong chapter .
The chief guest in his brief inaugural session said safety food supply now in danger due to unscrupulous motive of a number of dishonest traders and adulterators .
 He said present govt has adopted a number of measures to build adulteration free society as well as country, as such Safety Food Act and Safety Food authority is formulated. Chief Technical Advisor of FAO Dr. John Rider, Senior National Advisor Rokeya Khanam, Senior advisor Prof. Allen Relly and Consultant Dr.Margarita Corales presented power point projections on Safety Food. Among others, civil surgeon of Chittagong Dr. Sarfaraz Khan Chowdhury , President of Chittagong Press club Md. Kalim Sarwar, Journalist Nasirul Hoque, Mustafa Naim, Hasan Akber, Ranjit Shil spoke on the occasion.
 Chief Guest further said govt agencies are frequently monitoring the markets on formalin contamination in every food items and now anti-food adulteration drive in city is continuing.
Unscrupulous traders are being punished for storing date expired and adulterated food items and dry & green fruits, vegetables etc.
He said we should aware the people of all strata about the negative affect of adulterated food and in the meantime Chittagong district administration distributed 30 thousand leaflets including publishing advertisement in local dailies to aware the people about the bad impact of adulterated food and formalin contamination. Chief guest urged the mediamen to play positive role to aware the people about the bad impact of food adulteration and formalin contamination through their columns and writings. The workshop ended in the afternoon with thanks by the chair to all participants and guests and foreign consultants.
