BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said: Many people question as to why we’re joining the polls. I would like to say we are taking part in the polls to expose that fair and credible election cannot be held under the Awami League government.
He said this at a discussion in the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, arranged by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal marking its 41st founding anniversary.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “I would like to say when we had boycotted the 2014 election it was said that we made a mistake. We took part in the 2018 election to prove that we didn’t make mistake in 2014 as no fair election can be held under this government.”
“Now, we are asked again as to why we’re going to join the City Corporation election. I would like to say we are taking part in the polls to expose again that no fair and credible election can be held under the incumbent government,” he said.
Chief Election Commissioner Nurul Huda himself admitted that their Commission could not ensure free and fair election, while another Commissioner Mahbub Talukder clearly said, “EC is not capable of holding a credible election.”
Mirza Fakhrul was reacting to Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader’s question about the reason behind BNP’s participation in the city election since the party has no confidence in the Election Commission (EC).
He said that the people of the country do not want to see this government in power. The AL government is not the people’s government. People did not vote for them.
“Ask 100 people, 90 will say they do not want this government,” Fakhrul said.
