JnU Correspondent :
A section of Jagannath University (JnU) students on Wednesday protested the university’s vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman’s remark ‘I am not doing job at JnU, I am doing job for DU as well as I am the only proprietor of the university’ while speaking at a private TV channel on 14 this month which went viral on social media. Students also demanded for appointing VC and Treasurer from the university’s running teachers.
Hundreds of Students under the banner of “General Students of Jagannath University” brought out a procession which paraded Arts, Social Science and Science faculties of the university. They later formed a human chain in front of Shahed Minar of the university.
Agitating students at human chain said, ‘Being a renowned person of state and having such an honour of Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman chanted the unscrupulous remark which was a matter of grave concern. We are general students of the university strongly protesting at and condemning his speech. As he demanded himself an employer of Dhaka University not Jagannath University, so he should join there.”
They also asked the Vice-Chancellor to recant his ‘outrageous remarks. As there is no love in him regarding the university, so they don’t want him any more in the university.
“Such behaviour by the Vice-Chancellor constitutes an element disloyalty to the university. He has undermined the vice-chancellor post and the university. Therefore, we demand unconditional recanting of his remark.” said Tousib Mahmud Sohan-a third year student of Physics Department of the university.
The students placed a 3-day ultimatum, demanding an unconditional recanting from the university’s Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman for chanting “I am not doing job at JnU, I am doing job for DU as well as I am the only proprietor of the university” at a private TV talk show. Otherwise, emphasizing their time-bound ultimatum, the students threatened to wage wider movement against the Vice-Chancellor.
While approached, Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman said that the students who are protesting are not general students of the university.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor has recently been criticized on social media as he said if he was given the post of Juba League president, he would quit the post of Vice-Chancellor to bring the ruling party youth wing back on the right track.
