Dehydration causes acute kidney failure

When kidney diseases have emerged as common health problem, leading kidney specialists at a discussion warned that dehydration caused by diarrhoea and vomiting may lead to acute kidney failure.
As children frequently are affected by diarrhoea or vomiting, they are more vulnerable to acute kidney injury, they said on Wednesday while speaking at a discussion titled “Kidney diseases: children” at Rajuk Uttara Model College in the city.
As part of the massive awareness campaign, Save Life Foundation and Gift Live Foundation jointly organized the discussion to make the students aware of kidney ailment.
President of Bangladesh Kidney Foundation Prof Harun-or-Rashid said body rapidly losses excessive water, when someone is affected by diarrhoea and vomiting, which cause acute kidney failure.
“Being affected by diarrhoea, patients should take adequate saline and normal water to avoid dehydration.Otherwise, excessive losses of water may cause acute kidney injury,” he added.
Principal of Rajuk Uttara Model College Brigadier General MM Salehin, Prof Dr Arup Ratan Chowdhury, Chairman of Pharmacy Department of Dhaka University Prof Shitesh Chandra Bachar, Chairman of Save Life Foundation and Gift Live Foundation Kidney specialist Dr Sohely Ahmed Sweety addressed the discussion.
Teachers and students of the college, leaders of the Save Life Foundation and Gift Live Foundation were present.
Dr Sohely said unhealthy lifestyle leads to increase kidney ailment as Bangladesh is hugely suffering from the disease due to rapidly changing food habits and way of life. The people are being habituated with first food items and advancement of technology are shirking space of physical movement resulting in many non-communicable diseases including diabetics, heart diseases and high blood pressure, she added.
At the function, Chairperson of Save Life Foundation and Gift Life Foundation received a award from Rajuk Uttara Model College as a complement to aware its students of kidney diseases.
According to health experts birth defects and hereditary diseases are the leading causes of kidney failure among children and common symptoms for children are swelling of the hands and feet and puffiness around the eyes.
Other major symptoms include lack of or decrease in appetite, decreased or increased frequency of urination, long-lasting changes in the color of the urine such as unusually dark or red, flu-like symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, weakness, fatigue, loss of appetite, stunted or poor growth as compared to similar age group peers.
