Hasan Mahmud Rubel :Library is the heart of any educational institution. It makes an institution a complete source of knowledge. So, every educational institution should have library facilities for the betterment of its scholars. But the library of Jagannath University (JnU) is in a poorly unmannered condition. Therefore, this extremely worse situation of JnU Library is hampering the students’ habit of reading.More than 19,000 students are studying in the university of which most of them are from not very well to do families. They cannot buy all the books needed to continue their study. The central library is the only way for them. However, the university was set up in October, 2005 under an act passed by the national parliament. But authority of JnU has been failing to perk up the condition of the library over the last ten years, rather, has been playing reportedly a silent role to look up the sleazy condition of the library. At present, the central library has an accommodation of 150 chairs to sit on whereas, the students of JnU is more than19, 000.The library has about 15,000 books, a good number of them are too old, with pages torn off, which are too minimal to meet the requirement of the students of 32 departments. Sometimes students find books in the catalogue but not in the library. Especially, most Science Faculty students are dependable on Nilkhet market or on public library to get recent research collection books.”We have to face a lot of problems to get a new book or a pamphlet and maximum books are out of syllabus”, some girl students stated with a tone of grievance. A personnel of the library, with the request of anonymity, said, “The latest edition of imperative text books, journals, magazines are not available in the library. The library problem will amplify if crucial steps are not taken instantly”. While contacted, Librarian Md Anamul Haque said, “We have already taken necessary initiatives to modernize the facility of library. Soon the students are able to have the facilities”.But he demanded that there are no seat crises and the library contains a rich number of books.
