JnU holds 1st ‘Dhaka Bird Race-2016’

A two-day long bird competition titled ‘Dhaka Bird Race-2016’, with a view to raising awareness about bird conservation jointly organised by the Department of Zoology of Jagannath University and the ‘Nature Study and Conservation Club’ ended on Saturday. The slogan of the programme was “Golir Mathai Ekti Gachh, Tate o Hok Pakhir Bash”.
JnU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mijanur Rahman was present as the Chief Guest, while Treasurer Professor Md Selim Bhuiyan, Additional Secretary of Finance Ministry Jalal Ahmed, IUCN Bangladesh representative Istiyaque Uddin Ahmed, Project Director of SRCWP Akbar Hossain and General Secretary of Bangladesh Bird Club Kazi Ahmed Hossain were present as the special guests in the programme.
Speakers of the programme said, “About 15 per cent of the different species of birds are now on the verge of extinction, due to rampant deforestation and environmental pollution. We can raise awareness through such programme so that people will be encouraged to protect birds.”
The two-day long programmes include bird identification competition, speech competition, and watching city’s birds by telescope and binocular in the city’s different spots, discussion and cultural session relating to bird at the end of competition.
Chairman of the department Professor Dr Md Saiful Islam presided over the function.

However, JnU Zoology Department, Natural Study and Conservation Club, BGMEA, IUCN, Forest Directorates, Bangladesh Bird Club took part in the two-day long programmes.
