JMB leader buried after execution for murder of 2 Jhalakati judges

After his execution on Sunday night for killing two judges of Jhalakati back in 2005, Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) leader Asadul Islam alias Arif was buried at Udaypur Uttarkandi village early hours on Monday.

Asadul was buried at the graveyard near his father-in-law`s house at Udaypur Uttarkandi village in the upazila around 1.30am after a namaj-e-janaza, said officer-in-charge of Mollahat Police Station ANM Khairul Anam.

After an autopsy, the authorities of Khulna District Jail handed over Asadul`s body to his wife Khadija Begum.

An ambulance carrying the body of Asadul left Khulna District Jail premises for Bagerhat after his execution at 10:30pm on Sunday.

Two judges — Jagannath Pandey and Shahid Sohel Ahmed — were killed in a suicide bomb attack at Purba Chadkati in the district town of Jhalakati on November 14, 2005.

JMB chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman, his second-in-command Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, Rahman`s younger brother Ataur Rahman Sunny, his son-in-law Abdul Awal Molla alias Omar alias Shakil Ahmed, Amjad Hossain alias Khalid Saifullah, Iftekhar Hasan Al Mamun and Asadul were awarded death sentence by the trial court in Jhalakati on May 29, 2006 for killing the two judges.

The Appellate Division had upheld death penalty of six JMB leaders in the sensational killing case. The six former militants were executed on March 29, 2007.

Asadul, who had been on the run, was arrested from Mymensingh on July 10, 2007.

On August 28 last, the Supreme Court rejected a petition filed by Asadul seeking review of its earlier judgment that upheld his death penalty. — Bagerhat, Oct 17 (UNB)
