JL man killed in Kushtia factional clash, 10 hurt

Staff Reporter :A Jubo League (JL) activist was killed and 20 others, including six bullet-injured, were injured in a clash between two groups of the Awami League and the Swechchhasebak League workers at the Majampur level crossing area in Kushtia town on Saturday over mourning day rally.The victim has been identified as Sabuj, 23, son of Mobarak from Jhalupara under Sadar upazila and also an activist of the local Jubo League, police said.Abu Bakar Siddiqui, Additional Superintendent of Police, said that the clash began when the supporters of Anowar Ali, President of Kushtia district Awami League, and the activists of the Swechchhasebak League tried to bring out mourning procession in memory of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.Expelled AL leader and former AL District General Secretary Mominur Rahman was in charge of the one procession. A chase and counter-chase took place between the two groups and five to six gunshots were heard during the clash, leaving 11 people, including Sabuj, injured.The injured men were rushed to Kushtia General Hospital instantly and Sabuj succumbed to his injuries in the operation theatre at about 12:40pm.The condition of two injured was stated to be critical, hospital sources said. “At least 20 people were hurt in the clash,” he said. Six of the injured were shot during the clash, police sources said.
