Staff Reporter :
The central bank has asked for information on bank accounts of Awami Jubo League Chairman Omar Faroque Chowdhury as part of the government’s ongoing anti-corruption purge.
The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), an anti-money-laundering arm of the central bank, sent separate letters to different commercial banks on Thursday, seeking Chowdhury’s bank account information within three working days.
The central bank earlier also ordered to freeze accounts of several Jubo League bigwigs for their alleged involvement in money laundering through casino business in Dhaka.
The move follows a stern warning from Prime Minister and Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina at a recent meeting of the AL Central Working Committee.
The AL Chief vented anger over various allegations against some Jubo League leaders at the meeting, sources said.
