Victory Month December: Jhenaidah freed today

The people of Jhenaidah are going to observe December 6, widely known as “Jhenaidah-free-day.” The day was declared after nine-month liberation war from the clutch of the occupying Pakistan Army and their collaborators.
The leaders of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, Jhenidah District Unit command said, the inhabitants of Jhenaidah enjoyed the flavour of first independence on December 6 in 1971.
He said, the occupying forces took the control of Jhenaidah district (the then sub division) on April 14 in 1971.The occupation soldiers met in fierce face to face fighting with the freedom fighters at Bishoykhali, about eight kilometers south of Jhenaidah town.
To protect the freedom fighters, the heroic sons dug huge bunkers and remained alert. Earlier they had disconnected the road communication cutting the connecting road at Boshoykhali Bazer point on April 14.
Ex Commander of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Jhenidah district unit Golam Mostafa Loton said, 35 freedom fighters including Dukhi Mahmud, Sadar Uddin, Nazir Uddin, Khalilur Rahman, Golam Mostafa, Abdul Quddus, Enamul Haque and Badiul Alam sacrificed their lives during the battle. Some innocent people sacrificed their lives by the bullets of the brutal forces. BBC, AFP, Australia Radio and some other radios forecasted the news immediately which inspired the freedom loving people.
Loton added, freedom fighters of the district engaged in a number of fights with the occupation army at different places including Garaganj, Alfapur, Kamanna and Abaipur.
The ex commander said, the freedom fighters led by the then sub divisional police officer (SDPO) Mahbubur Rahman switched off the electricity line when a number of Pakistani forces arrived Jhenaidah town in the night of late March. But they left Jhenaidah fearing attack from the freedom fighters. Finding no other alternative, they marched towards Kushtia faster.
Tajuddin Ahmed, the prime minister of Bangladesh along with his close associate Barister Ahmedul Islam in the guises of common people arrived in Jhenaidah in early April and talked to the SDPO and leading people of Jhenaidah following the plan of fighting against the occupying forces. The prime minister left Jhenaidah for India in the early morning, he said.
In late November in 1971, a large number of guerrillas entered the then Jhenaidah sub-division and made all out preparations to launch the final attack on the occupation forces. They bravely fought the Pakistani troops, forcing them to surrender or retreat to other areas.
Finally on December 6, after the people of Jhenaidah hoisted the red and green national flag on their hands and rushed at Jhenaidah Municipal Park at the noon. The alliance forces of India had played a significant role in blowing out the occupying forces of Pakistan.
Makbul Hossain, Commander of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, Jhenidah District Unit command said, they arrange a lot of programmes like reunion of the freedom fighters, hoist national flag, Doah Mahfil and discussion meeting at Bishoikhali where the brutal forces killed the innocent people and the freedom fighters following the day.
