Jhenaidah Correspondent :
The farmers in Jhenaidah have been reducing the area of Boro farming in the current season and leaning towards lentil, wheat, onion and maize. The area of Boro farming might be reduced to 75,000 hectares as against last season’s target for 83,601 hectares. Last season the farmers in the district had brought 83,601 hectares of land under the farming.
Least price of Transplanted Aman paddy was mainly liable for the situation, said the farmers and department of agriculture extension (DAE) officials in Jhenaidah.
DAE sources said, the farmers have been showing their keen interest on lentil, wheat, onion and maize farming this season.
According to the sources, the DAE had fixed a target to produce 316,939 tones of Boro paddy on a total of 82,020 hectares of land in Jhenaidah Sadar, Kaliganj, Kotchandpur, Moheshpur, Sailkupa and Harinakundu upazilas of the district in the season.
But the farmers in all upazilas have been showing their keen interest for benefitting crops leaving Boro. As a result the Boro farming area is apprehended to be reduced here, they said.
Farmer Rashedul Hasan of Manaharpur village under Sailkupa said, he had reduced the area of Boro farming in the season to five bighas as against last season for 15 bighas. Wheat, onion and lentil had replaced the Boro farming, Hasan said.
Some other farmers at Khalishpur under Moheshpur upoazila when contacted said, the Boro farming might be reduced to 70 percent as the paddy was not a profitable crop any more. The farmers could not realize even the production costs in the Transplanting season, they said.
Farmer Amjad Hossain said, a farmer could receive Taka 8,800 from his 16 maunds of paddy from one hectare of land, while he would spend at least Taka 4,500. But the lentil, onion, wheat and some other crops might ensure almost double than the paddy farming. The decreasing trend in the paddy had discouraged in paddy farming, Amjad said.
Deputy Director of the DAE in Jhenaidah Shah Akramul Haque when contacted said, as the prices of paddy fallen in past couple of seasons, the area of Boro operation might be reduced partially.
