UNB, Dhaka :
Bangladesh has urged the UN Security Council to consider working on a resolution against illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Addressing the Council during an open debate, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Masud Bin Momen said continued Israeli settlements posed the biggest challenge to resuming the Middle East peace process.
He reiterated the call for a peaceful, just and durable solution to the Palestine-Israeli conflict, according to a message received here from New York on Thursday.
Momen reaffirmed Bangladesh’s support for the rights of Palestinian people and their legitimate aspiration for an independent state. He called upon the international community to pressurise Israel to end its systematic violation of international humanitarian law in the occupied territories, and expressed concern over the nearly 10-year long Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip affecting two million Palestinians.
The Permanent Representative flagged Bangladesh’s support for a proposal to mark the fiftieth year of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories by declaring 2017 as the ‘International Year to End the Occupation’.
