Nuruzzaman Johny, 30 a leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in the city’s Khilgaon area early Tuesday.
Jony was involved in the petrol bomb attack on a police bus in Matsya Bhaban area under Ramna Police Station in the city on Sunday evening where about 12 policemen were injured, claimed DMP’s Deputy Commissioner (DB) Krishnapodo Roy.
Son of Yaqub Ali Johny was the General Secretary of the JCD Khilgaon unit and was a student of Habibullah Bahar College in the city, police and family sources said.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family members said that the DB members picked up Jony from Nazimuddin Road area on Monday afternoon as he was missing after meeting with his brother Moniruzzaman at the central jail around 1:30am.
Later, the family members claimed that the DB personnel shot him dead intentionally at Khilgaon around 2:30am in the name of ‘gunfight.
The DB official, Krishnapodo Roy, said that a team of detective police along with Jony conducted a drive in Jorapukur playground area in Tilpapara of Khilgaon at around 2:30am.
Sensing police presence, the cohorts of Jony hurled crude bombs on the policemen, which triggered a gunfight where Jony received severe bullet injuries, he said.
Quoting the doctors, Mostafiz Bhuyian, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khilgaon Police Station said that Jony was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) with 15 bullet injuries at about 3:45am, where doctors declared him dead.
The body bore several marks of bullet wounds on the chest and stomachs, the OC said.
Police also recovered a pistol, six crude bombs, 20 rounds of bullets and at least 15 petrol bombs from the spot, he said.
The DB has filed at least three cases with the Khilgaon Police Station in this connection, the OC said.
At least six cases were filed against Jony in the DMP’s several police stations, said OC Mostafiz Bhuyian.
The victim’s cousin Shahidul Islam claimed that Jony was picked up by the DB members from Nazimuddin Road after his meeting with imprisonment brother Moniruzzaman in the Central Jail Headquarters on Monday afternoon.
The deceased’s father Yaqub Ali burst into tears after finding the body of his son at the DMCH morgue.
He said that his son has no relation with any kind of crime in the city and elsewhere. He sought the justice for the murder of his son.
Jony’s mother Nilufar Parveen termed his son innocent and sought justice to Allah. She claimed that the DB man killed her son intentionally as he does the politics of JCD.
The Deceased’s seven-month-pregnant wife Munira Jahan told reporters that all cases were filed against her husband just for harassment.
The local JCD Office Secretary Abdus Sattar Patwary said that the plainclothes police picked up Jony from city’s anyplace in the afternoon.
DMCH Police Outpost In-Charge and Sub-Inspector (SI) Mozammel Haque said that the body kept at the hospital morgue.
Meanwhile, in protest, the JCD has called a 48-hour hartal in Dhaka division and in the capital city from Wednesday morning coinciding with a shutdown called by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
