Central President of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal [JCD] Rajib Ahsan and his five associates have been sent to jail after police produced them in a court of Patuakhali on Monday in connection with a case filed on the charge of possessing Yaba pills.
Tareque Shams, Senior Judge of Patuakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, passed the order. The police, however, did not seek any remand against
them in this connection. Rajib’s lawyer however, said that he would submit bail petition for the six JCD leaders on Tuesday (today). Earlier, the police arrested President of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) Rajib Ahsan and five others from Lebukhali ferryghat in Patuakhali district with 45 Yaba pills and a bottle of hard liquor on Sunday night.
The others arrested were Md Salahuddin, Rafiqul Islam, Syed Jasim Uddin, Saiful Islam and the car’s driver Ashim Howlader. All of them hail from Barisal’s Mehendiganj.
The JCD leaders said Rajib was arrested when he was returning after offering fateha at his father’s grave at Mehendiganj.
The police searched the private car, in which Ahsan and four others were travelling and found 45 Yaba and a bottle of hard liquor in the vehicle.
After the arrest, Rajib was taken to Dumki Police Station custody and later taken to the District Sadar Police station custody on Monday morning.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Saheb Ali Pathan said, “The Jubo Dal leaders were detained from Lebukhali pier at Dumki around 11pm.”
“A team of police led by Dumki OC Azam Khan Faruki arrested Rajib Ahsan after a tip-off that he was going to Kuakata with Yaba tablets. He is wanted in several cases,” he said, adding that the JCD chief would be charged under the narcotics act.
In a briefing at his office, SP Fayez Ahmed said that they had information that Rajib, an accused in several cases, was going to Kuakata with drugs. Later, a police squad led by Dumki OC Azam Khan Faruqi conducted a raid at Lebukhali ferryghat and arrested Rajib.
Rejecting the claim of SP, JCD vice-president Nazmul Hasan said Rajib went to his village home to meet his family members. After offering fateha at his father’s grave, he went to the home of a relative. When he was returning to Dhaka, police had arrested him.
JCD Office Secretary Abdus Sattar also said that Rajib Ahsan was returning to Dhaka from his village home at Barisal after visiting relatives in Patuakhali.
Protesting the arrest, the JCD announced two-day protest programme across the country from Tuesday.
As part of the programme, demonstration will be staged at all cities, districts and public universities on Tuesday, and the same programme will be held at upazila, municipality and college level on Wednesday.
The programme was announced in a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in Dhaka yesterday.
Meanwhile, police conducted a raid into the Khilgaon residence of JCD general secretary Akramul Hasan Akram at about 11pm on Sunday. But police could not arrest him as he was outside the capital.
