Entertainment Report :
Love of Jaya Ahsan for dogs is communicable. Ever since the lockdown began, the Guerrilla actress kept herself busy by feeding stray dogs, posting cute pictures of her pets and championing a message of love and grace.
Her photos of feeding stray dogs went viral in late March during lockdown. According to reports, the actress had been regularly taking care of 25 to 30 street dogs in Dilu Road, Eskaton Garden and Moghbazar area in the capital.
Although Jaya seemed reluctant to promote her animal welfare work in the past, the recent move by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), regarded by many as ‘inhuman,’ forced her hands. She has come out and urged everyone to nurture more empathy towards stray dogs. In the midst of the pandemic, she has joined the growing movement of animal rights activists and taken to the street.
It all began when the DSCC started to illegally relocate 30,000 stray dogs from Dhaka to outside the city. This initiative prompted a swift and scathing response from animal lovers in the capital including Jaya Ahsan.
Last month, Jaya attended People for Animal Welfare Foundation’s awareness campaign, in an attempt to save stray dogs, through murals on roadside walls.
On August 28 to 29, the two-day-long awareness programme was conducted by 22 young artists. There, Jaya Ahsan was the most notable face to criticise the DSCC’s initiative. She later pleaded on Facebook to stop the ‘execution’ of our ‘angel friends,’ and emphasised on the millenniums-long relationship between human beings and dogs.
Jaya endearingly called stray dogs in the past ‘free dogs.’
