Jatiya Oikyafront’s Gaibandha-3 candidate Fazle Rabbi dies

Dr TIM Fazle Rabbi, a candidate of the BNP-led 20-party alliance for Gaibandha-3 constituency, passed away due to old age complications at a city hospital early Thursday. He was 84.
Fazle Rabbi, also a former Jatiya Party minister, breathed his last around
 3:30 am at United Hospital. He had long been suffering from various diseases, including bronchitis, high blood pressure and cardiac problems.
Golam Mostafa, the press wing chief of Jatiya Party (Zafar), said Fazle Rabbi was taken to the hospital around 2:30am as he complained of chest pain at his Banani residence and died while undergoing treatment.
He left behind wife, three sons, two daughters and a host of relatives to mourn his death.
Fazle Rabbi will be buried at his family graveyard at Talukjamira village in Gaibandha’s Palashbari upazila on Friday after his several namaz-e-janazas.
Hearing the news of his death, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir rushed to the hospital and consoled the bereaved family members of the 20-party candidate.
Born in Talukjamira village in Palashbari upazila, Fazle Rabbi was elected MP from Gaibandha-3 constituency for six times — 1986, 1988, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2008 — with Jatiya Party ticket.
A former vice chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Fazle Rabbi joined HM Ershad’s Jatiya Party in 1984 and served as land and establishment minister during its rule.
He along with Kazi Zafar Ahmed and some other leaders of their party formed a faction of Jatiya Party in November 2013. Their faction joined the BNP-led alliance around two months later.
After the demise of Kazi Zafar, Fazle Rabbi became the acting chairman of the Jatiya Party faction.
The BNP-led 20-party alliance nominated him as a candidate of Sheaf of Paddy for Gaibandha-3 seat considering his popularity. Shafiul Islam Swapan, former president of Sadullapur upazila unit BNP, said Fazle Rabbi had been suffering from heart disease and could not campaign ahead of the 11th national election properly due to his illness.
He said Fazle Rabbi was supposed to go to Palashbari for electioneering on Friday.
