Jasim Pollimela begins Jan 10

Brisk preparations are afoot to hold the fortnight long pollimela (village fair) under the style of Jasim Pollimela commemorating the 112th birth anniversary of great folklore poet Jasimuddin will begin here on January 10 at village Gobindapur on the bank of Kumar river adjacent to the ancestral home and grave of the poet.
An annual ritual since 1996, this attractive pollimela attracts thousands of people that depict the folk culture of rural Bangladesh along with modern entertainment persuasions presented by the artistes of local and other places of the country.
Though the poet’s birth day was on January 1, but the fair is shifted due to some preoccupations of the organizers. District Administration and Jasim Foundation headed by Deputy Commissioner along with a number of sub-committees are working to make the fortnight long fair a success and attractive.
About two hundred temporary stalls have been set up on the fair premises along with decorated permanent stage (Jasim Mancha) for cultural performances.
The stalls will consist mostly with handicrafts and rural oriented cottage goods both for display and sale. Arrangements have also been made for other recreational options including circus.
To make the fortnight long fair secured and pleasant all necessary measures including security, electricity, water supply, fire services, sanitation and improvement of connecting roads have been done. A colorful souvenir will be brought out to mark the occasion.
Renovation of the graveyard located by the side of the fair site where the poet is having his eternal sleep under the shadow of a pomegranate (Dalim) tree with a sign board engraving “Here is the grave of your grandma under the pomegranate tree, I have soaked for last thirty years with the tears of my two eyes”. The sign board carries famous stanza from his immortal poem ‘Kabor’.
The completion of the Jasim Mausoleum built at an estimated cost of Taka 15 crore beside the ancestral house of the poet is having last touch. The project taken up by the Cultural Ministry in 2010 with the object of preserving the works as well as providing facilities for research work on Jasimuddin. This mausoleum will be an additional attraction for the visitors of home and abroad this year.
DC of Faridpur Sardar Sharafat Ali told BSS yesterday that Overseas Employment and Expatriate Welfare Minister Engineer Khondoker Mosharraf Hossain will be the chief guest at the inaugural function while Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu will inaugurate the fortnight long fair.
