Japan to provide assistance for waste collection in Dhaka, Ctg

An agreement was singed between the governments of Japan and Bangladesh on Wednesday under which Japan will provide the grant assistance worth 1,486 million Japanese Yen to deploy 150 waste collection vehicles in Dhaka and Chittagong cities.
The signing ceremony of the grant assistance under “The Project for Improvement of Solid Waste management Equipment” was held at Economic Relations Division (ERD) of Ministry of Finance, said a Jica press release .
Takeshi Matsunaga, Chargés d’affaires ad interim, the Embassy of Japan and Mohammed Abu Taher, Additional Secretary of ERD signed the Exchange of Notes representing the respective governments.
MikioHataeda, Chief Representative of JICA Bangladesh Office, also attended the ceremony and signed the Grant Agreement for the project.
Since 2003, Japan has been continuously extending assistance, in several ways, to realize “Clean Dhaka”. Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) have improved the waste management service based on “Clean Dhaka Master Plan,” which was formulated and implemented with Japanese support, said the release.
Dhaka’s capacity of solid waste management increased from 1,400 tons per day in 2004 to 3,300 tons per day in 2014.
However, the amount of solid wastes dispensed with in Dhaka is estimated to increase to 5,700 tons per day in 2019 entailing a risk of widening gap between the needs and the capacity.
