Jamaat`s bid to return to streets

Clashes with police, 15 held

Staff Reporter :The Jamaat-e-Islami tried to return to the streets on Wednesday in memory of some of the party activists who were killed in the city on this day in 2006. Marking the occasion, the party men brought out processions in the city and some other parts of the country. They, however, faced police actions in several parts.  Police arrested at least 15 leaders and activists of the party from different parts of the city and dispersed several processions. Clashes took place between the Jamaat men and the police during the programme. The Jamaat-e-Islami called countrywide demonstration for Wednesday demanding trail of Awami League workers, who allegedly killed the Jamaat-Shibir men with “logi-boitha” during a procession in 2006.  As part of the countrywide programme, the Jamaat-Shibir men brought out sudden processions at Mirpur, Jatrabari, Badda, Khilgaon and several other places of the city in the morning. Clashes were reported from Jatrabari, Mirpur and Kafrul areas. Police claimed that they arrested some Jamaat men and recovered explosives. Three Jamaat activists were arrested after a clash with police at Konapara of Jatrabari. They are Saddam Hossain, 23, Tanvirul Alam, Jewel, 18, and Mostafa Kamal, 52.The clash ensued when police tried to resist a procession of the Jamaat. A chase and counter-chase took place between the Jamaat men and the police. At one stage, the Jamaat men hurled brickbats at police and exploded some crude bombs, while police fired eight blank shots. Police also charged baton and picked up the three Jamaat-Shibir men from the spot. Police said that they also recovered an unexploded crude bomb from the scene. Meanwhile, police arrested eight activists of the party from Pirerbagh and Shewrapara of Mirpur. Police claimed that they also recovered cocktails, handmade bombs from them. Jamaat central leader Mobarak Hossain is one of them. OC of Mirpur Police Station Bhuiyan Mahbub Hossain said that they recovered posters, Islami books, Molotov cocktails and handmade bombs from the arrested Jamaat men. At Kafrul, police nabbed four Jamaat activists from a procession. Kafrul police said that they dispersed the procession by charging baton and detained four agitators.The Jamaat-e-Islami also brought out processions in Sylhet, Feni, Laxmipur, Chhittagong and Satkhira.
