Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Monday called upon the party leaders and workers to remain alert so that Jamaat-Shibir leaders could not intrude into the anti-militancy and anti-terrorism committees.
Calling for constituting anti-militancy committees in all thana, ward and union units of the capital at the earliest, he said the committees should not only be constituted with Awami League leaders but there should be representation of a cross section of local people and professionals in the committees.
However, the Awami League leader said, “Keep a vigil eye so that leaders of Jamaat and Shibir can’t be inducted in these committees.”
Hanif said this while speaking as the chief guest at an extended meeting of Dhaka City North unit of Awami League (AL) at Gulshan Youth Club in the city.
The preparatory meeting was convened in response to the call of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to constitute anti-terrorism committees in all the districts, upazilas, wards and unions in the country.
President of Dhaka City North AL AKM Rahamatullah presided over the meeting, also addressed, among others, by Awami League international affairs secretary Lt Col (Retd) Faruque Khan, Dhaka City North AL general secretary Sadek Khan, Ilyas Uddin Mollah, MP and City AL leader Sheikh Bazlur Rahman.
Pointing at BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, Hanif said, “Please, handover the list of identified war criminals in your alliance to the government if you really want to extend cooperation to the government in stamping out militancy.”
Turning to BNP’s call for national unity in facing militancy and terrorism, the AL leader said, “It’s nothing but a strategy of BNP to save the terrorists in its party-fold. They BNP) have adopted a new strategy now to cover-up its misdeeds after killing people setting them on flames for consecutive 90 days in the name of movement.”
Hanif said, “People of the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have started building resistance against militancy and terrorism. And at the same time, the call of BNP for national unity is of no use. So, BNP should extend cooperation to the government ethically.”
