Jamaat-e-Islami could not hold its pre-announced rally at the north gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the city on Thursday, as the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) did not allow the party to hold the rally.
The rally was part of its nationwide programme declared on Wednesday protesting, what they said, the government’s repressive measures against the party and its members.
After the announcement of the programme, Dhaka city unit of the party submitted a letter to DMP seeking permission to hold the rally with loudspeaker. But the authorities did not give permission.
A large number of police members of other law enforcing agencies were deployed in the Baitul Mukarram Mosque area from the morning to avert violence.
Meanwhile, Jamaat held rallies and processions in some parts of the country as part its countrywide programme.
