A man was detained by detectives from city’s Tejgaon area for his alleged involvement with the issuance of death threats to some noted citizens of the country.
The detained man who was identified as Abdul Haque, 23, of Chhatak Upazila of Habiganj, is a fraud.
Monirul Islam, Joint Commissioner and spokesman of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said this in a press briefing at DMP media centre on Wednesday afternoon.
Monirul Islam claimed that eminent personalities, including Prof Anisuzzaman and Prof Jafar Iqbal, were threatened over past enmity.
“Abdul Haque is a Jamaat-e-Islami activist and former Madrasha teacher. He was arrested after unidentified militants issued threats to 153 persons,” he said.
Abdul Haque used “spoofing software” to trap his friends and the vice-principal of a madrasha to take revenge, Monirul Islam claimed.
“He was active in Facebook in the name of Faizur Rahman, Saleh Ahmed Fuad and Mawlana Saad. He used spoofing technology (IP address forgery to avoid tracking),” said the Joint Commissioner.
Dhaka University professor emeritus Anisuzzaman filed a complaint with Gulshan police on November 10.
On November 16, AKM Shahidul Hoque, Inspector General of Police claimed, “We tracked the owner of the mobile phone used to issue the threat. But the investigators found him innocent. His phone set that was number had been cloned,” he claimed.
Meanwhile, another man was detained by a separate team of Detective Branch (DB) of Police from the city’s Badda area on Tuesday night on charge of conducting campaign through internet in favour of the Middle East-based militant outfit Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
The detained man has been identified as Nahid Hossain, he said.
“The DB police conducted a drive in the area and arrested Nahid on charge of spreading voices of ISIS through internet by using the name, ‘Jihadi John’, the police official said.
He is being interrogated in this connection, the police official said.
“We also find some unsocial photo images on his mobile set,” the Joint Commissioner said.
