Jamaat leader killed in Rajshahi ‘gunfight’ with detectives

A local leader of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police in Nalkhola area under Matihar thana of the city early Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Nurul Islam Munsi, secretary of the city ward no. 30 unit Jamaat and also a professor of Islamia College of the city. Assistant police commissioner Iftekhayer Alam said a team of DB police launched a drive along with Nurul Islam to recover firearms in the area in the dead of night. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, activists of Jamaat-Shibir fired gunshots in a bid to snatch him, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, which triggered a gunfight, leaving him dead on the spot. Masuma Akter, wife of Nurul Islam, said DB police had picked up her husband from in front of a shop named Padma Offset in the city at about 9:00 pm on Tuesday night. She also claimed the DB police admitting her husband’s arrest said that he (Nurul Islam) would be produced before a court on Wednesday.- UNB, Dhaka.
