Hartal in Jhenidah today: Jamaat activists clash with cops

The activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed with police in Natore and several other parts of the country on Monday that left at least 26 people, including two policemen, injured. Police arrested at least 30 Jamaat-Shibir men from several parts.Jamaat-Shibir, on the other hand, claimed that their more than one hundred leaders and workers were injured in police attack. Police arrested at least 50 workers from several parts of the country, including Dhaka, Rangpur and Natore.  Meanwhile, Jamaat has called a dawn to dusk hartal at Kutchandpur and Mohespur upazilas in Jhenaidah today (Tuesday), protesting killing of the party leader Hafez Abul Kalam, who is also a member of Elangi U/P of Kutchandpur. Kutchandpur upazila unit Ameer Maulana Tajul Islam said in in a statement on Monday. Police recovered the body of Abul Kalam from Mamunshia village in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila on Monday morning. Jamaat claimed that Abul Kalam was killed in a planned way, as his body was found four days after abduction by plan-cloth DB Police. The Jamaat staged countywide demonstration on Monday demanding release of the party Ameer Maulana Matiur Rahman Nijami, Nayebe Ameer Maulana Delawar Hossain Sayedee and other top leaders of the party, who are now facing charges of war crimes.As part of the countrywide programme, Natore city unit of the party brought out a procession in the morning from Harishpur Bypass intersection. Police dispersed the procession minutes after its bringing out, triggering the clash. Jamaat activists threw brickbats at the police while the police fired several rounds of rubber bullets. Natore Sadar Thana OC Aslam Uddin said that 14 rounds of rubber bullets and nine round of teargas shells were fired.Jamaat activist Shahabudin and former Shibir leader Shamsul Islam Kallol were injured in the firing. At least 20 others were also injured. Kallol was admitted to Natore Mission Hospital, later he was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital due to critical condition. Two policemen- the OC Aslam Uddin and Sub-Inspector Nuruzzaman, were also injured during the clash. They received primary treatment at Sadar Hospital. Four activists of Jamaat-Shibir were also arrested from the spot. In the capital, the law enforcers detained three Jamaat-Shibir activists from Mohakhali when they tried to bring out a procession as part of their countrywide demonstration programme.In Rangpur, a clash also took place between the Jamaat-Shibir men and the police when the Jamaat-Shibit activists brought out a procession in the city. Police arrested some people from the procession. In Rajshahi, the Jamaat-Shibir men also brought out a procession in Talaimari area of Rajshahi city in the morning as part of the programme. Police also arrested Jamaaat-Shibir activists from Noakhali and some other parts.
