Jamaat activist killed in gunfight with cops

A Jamaat-e-Islami activist was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Chhonkhola village in Satkania upazila early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Bashar, 35, son of late Dudu Miah of the village and a follower of former Jamaat MP Shahjahan Chowdhury, police sources said. Officer-in-Charge
of Satkania Police Station Farid said police arrested Bashar from Pukuria village in Banshkhali upazila around 5pm on Saturday.
Based on information, a team of police conducted a drive in Chhonkhola village to recover arms around 5am on Sunday. The law enforcer took the arrestee along with them.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, associates of Bashar opened fire at them, prompting the police personnel to retaliate that triggered a gunfight. Bashar was caught in the line of fire and injured while his associates managed to flee the scene. Bashar was rushed to Satkania Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead. Eight policemen were also injured during the gunfight. Two guns, one pistol and three cartridges were recovered from the spot.
Bashar was wanted in 21 cases including those for robbery and subversive activities, the OC added.
