The government put all 67 jails and Border outposts in the country on red alert, after criminals attacked a prison van and snatched away three including two condemned death row activists of Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from Mymensingh on Sunday morning.
The red alert has been issued at the border outposts also to prevent the remaining two convicted JMB men from fleeing the country.
Along with the red alert in all jails, additional forces from RAB and police have been deployed, and intelligence agencies also heightened their vigilance,” Inspector General of Prisons (IG-Prisons) Brigadier General Syed Iftkhar Uddin told The New Nation. Farman Ali, senior superintendent of Dhaka Central Jail, said apart from the intelligence vigilance and measures by Dhaka Metropolitan Police, 30 personnel from RAB, and 50 others from Armed Police Battalion were deployed around the jail.
The officials directed the jail authorities to turn on all close circuit televisions, and to keep special watch on the convicts in the case, he added.
The authorities of Chittagong Central Jail have taken up tight security measures as 15 convicted JMB men, known to be associates of snatched JMB member Boma Mizan, are now inside the jail, said Mohammad Sagir Mia, senior superintendent of the jail.
Rajshahi Central Jail has been put on ‘red alert’, jailor Ismail Hossain told this reporter on Sunday.
“More than 100 leaders and activists of JMB are detained at Rajshahi Central Jail,” he said. “Security has been strengthened inside the prison and the area around it to prevent any unpleasant event.”
Acting Superintendent of Police (SP) of Tangail district Hasibul Alam told this reporters that a man suspected to have been involved had been from the Taktarchala area of Mirzapur Upazila.
Police have announced Tk 200,000 as bounty for each of the three top militants freed in the daring daylight operation.
