UNB, Dhaka :
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain said on Wednesday that the personal jealousy and rivalry between Shamim Osman and Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy have triggered Tuesday’s clashes in Narayanganj.
Talking to the reporters at the secretariat, the minister referred the duo in saying, “Both of you are in power, what can we do – if you fight each other.” About the eviction drive in Narayanganj, the minister said “(The person) who launched the eviction drive is an elected mayor while who opposed it is also an elected public representative. But it is not
right to do something using muscle power. Why hawkers will occupy the footpaths?” “If mayor conducts eviction, it is legal while rehabilitation of hawkers also a humanitarian issue. I’m not aware of the complete matter, so can’t comment anything about it yet. But the conflict is entirely personal. It is not related with government’s reputation.” At least 50 people, including seven policemen and five journalists, were injured in a clash between hawkers and the followers of Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy during an eviction drive at Chashara intersection of the city on Tuesday afternoon.
