The Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) organised a programme to clean-up Buriganga river on the occasion of International Biodiversity Day 2014 at Sadar Ghat Terminal in collaboration with Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (BAPA) on Thursday. The slogan of the event was “Water Bodies for Life”.
Eminent journalist and columnist Syed Abul Moksud inaugurated the programme. Among others Dr Abdul Matin (general secretary, BAPA), Iqbal Habib (joint secretary, BAPA) took part in the clean-up.
Around 300 students from Independent University Bangladesh have taken initiative to set a good example about how to keep the water bodies of the capital clean. Faculty of department of Environmental Management from IUB, Mohammed Abdul Baten, Kazi Sanjida Lisa, Tanvir Ahmed Harun, Sohana Haque were also present at the event to guide and encourage the future leaders and policy makers studying in the university.
The event was organised to raise awareness among the students regarding the importance, current state of pollution and plausible remedies of the Buriganga River, on the bank of which the capital city is built. The students spent nearly two hours around the terminal and collected 15 jute sacks of waste each weighing 80kg.
Through this symbolic clean-up programme the students could collect a very tiny amount of waste from river compared to its current state of dumped waste, but they tried to show how every concerned citizen should perform their responsibilities to keep the water bodies of the country clean, free from pollution and encroachment.
