BBC Online :
Israel has agreed to free a Palestinian prisoner who has been on hunger strike for 55 days and is thought to be in serious condition, officials say.
They say Khader Adnan, an Islamic Jihad activist, will begin to eat and drink, and will be released in two weeks.
He is being held in “administrative detention” – a procedure under which Israel is able to imprison security suspects without trial.
Gaza-based Islamic Jihad had threatened violence if Adnan died.
Qadoura Fares, chairman of the Palestinian Prisoners Club, said that a “deal has been reached” for Adnan to end his hunger strike and that Israel would then release him on 12 July, according to Reuters.
Israel’s Haaretz newspaper also reported that the Israeli authorities had agreed to free Adnan, who is currently in hospital.
Adnan, who comes from Jenin in the occupied West Bank, has been arrested a number of times by Israel, most recently in July 2014.
Under “administrative detention” Israel can hold suspects indefinitely for renewable six-month periods. The controversial measure has been criticised by human rights groups.
