Isolation from parents, other family members as well as society and misuse of the modern technology like internet, are encouraging the wealthy youths to get themselves involved in the militancy, experts say.
“As a section of youths from the elite are frustrated and remain detached from the society, they are joining different militant organisations,” Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, Professor Emeritus of Dhaka University told The New Nation on Tuesday.
Apart from these, political failure is also pushing the young generation into the dark, he said, adding the country’s politics has also failed to give minimum space to youths to do something creative.
“Besides, the educational institutions also failed to give them proper knowledge to become a worthy citizen of the country. Absence of practice of cultural activity is also contributing youth to do wrong doing,” Sirajul Islam Chowdhury said.
The experts also said, it is not poverty rather narrow religious education is responsible for the wrong doing of the youths.
When contacted Professor Mahfuza Khanam, Department of Psychology of Dhaka University said the religion matter is not only responsible for the militancy and extremism.
“Huge wealth and money are the main reasons for derailing the youths. As the youths from well-being families do not have any need, they want to do something different. And this way, they become frustrated, and at one stage get themselves involved in the militancy,” she said.
She said these youths think that everything at their hands so that they can do everything what they want.
“And then they go for adventure,” said Mahfuza Khanam.
“Before the Gulshan and Sholakia attack and the Kalyanpur raid, it is in generally was thought that the poverty and narrow education system in religious institutions were the
causes of extremism. But the recent incidents have proved that it was not true now,” Associate Professor Mahbub Kaisar of Sociology Department of Dhaka University told The New Nation.
Sources said, most of the militants in recent incidents were found modern and highly educated and came from highly affluent and elite families.
According to the police, 16 militants were killed and two more were arrested at Gulshan and Sholakia attacks and in Kalyanpur raid. Six out of the 18 militants found well-educated from prestigious English Medium Schools. And most of them studied at private universities.
Besides, the suspected mastermind of Gulshan and Sholakia attack, fugitive Tamim Chowdhury was born and grown in Canada. The western educated mid-thirty aged such ones involvement in militancy also shocked the experts.
Militant Rohan Ibn Imtiaz who was killed in Holey Artisan Bakery attack in Gulshan passed `A’ Level from English medium school Scholasticas and was studying at BRAC University in the capital.
Another slain militant in the same incident, Mir Sameh Mobaswir also passed `O’ level from Scholastica. Nibras Islam also killed in Holey Artisan Bakery also studied at Turkish Hope School. He was also the student of Monash University of Malaysia.
Abir Rahman, killed in gunfight with police at Eid at Sholakia passed `A’ level from English medium school, Bangladesh International Tutorial (BIT). In Kalyanpur den raid, slain Shehzad Rauf alias Arka was a US citizen, also a student of North South University.
Taj-ul-Haque also killed in same incident passed `A’ Level. Akifuzzaman, another killed militants in the Kalyanpur incident also studied at English medium school, Turkish Hope School.
The experts said, now days the parents of the rich families are leading very busy life. Father and mother both are busy with businesses, jobs or social works. They have failed to give time to their children. It made the youths isolated from family and eventually from the society.
Now, the youths are passing time not with their families but with some devices like smart phone or laptops. Even most of them do not like to meet their friends physically. They are like to meet with friends through Internet by face book, tweeter or instagram. These attitudes also are responsible for making the youths isolated.
The experts said, the masterminds of the militants catch these isolated youths. They used to wash their brain in various ways. The youths think that they are involving something `heroic matter’ which can change the world.
