250kg war-time bomb found in Dhaka airport

A cylinder-type bomb weighing around 250kg was recovered while digging at the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital on Wednesday.
According to HSIA sources, the construction workers were piling at the third terminal of the airport yesterday morning, at that time, they saw the bomb about three metres deep in
the earth. They informed the authorities about the matter.
Group Captain AHM Touhid-ul Ahsan, Director of the Airport, confirmed the news to the media saying that after found the bomb, on information, members of the Air Force’s Bomb Disposal Unit went to the spot and identified it as a General-Purpose (GP) bomb “.
Mentionable that a general-purpose bomb (GP bomb) is an air-dropped bomb intended as a compromise between blast damage, penetration, and fragmentation in explosive effect. They are designed to be effective against enemy troops, vehicles, and buildings.
Initially they defused the bomb. Later it was taken to Mymensingh Rasulpur base of the Air Force to deactivate it completely.
An official of Armed Police Battalion (APB) working at the airport said that the bomb which recovered was around 8-10 feet below the ground.
Kaikobad Kazi, Officer-in-Charge of Airport Police Station, told the media that excavation work led by the Air Force at the third terminal area was running.
However, it is not possible to say for sure whether it is a bomb or something else, OC added.
Experts assumed that the bomb had been there since the liberation war 1971.
However, the scene or the third terminal which is outside the main airport area is now safe, officials added.
