Islamic scholars for spl cell to tackle militancy

Islamic scholars at a roundtable here on Saturday pressed for distinct cell with alem, ulama, peer, mashayekh and intellectuals as its members for making people aware about growing threat of militancy in the country.
“Islam is the religion of peace and it does not support militant activities in the name of religion. Running campaigns against militancy, only through Islamic Foundation will not yield any fruits.
The Islamic scholars will also have to be engaged with this process,” they said. The Islamic scholars made the call at a roundtable organized by publicity and publication sub-committee of Awami League (AL) at the seminar room of the Institute of Engineers of Bangladesh (IEB) in the city. Presided over by Political Adviser to Prime Minister and convener of publicity and publication sub-committee HT Imam, the discussion was addressed by AL publicity and publication secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud, AL advisory council member Khandaker Golam Mawla Nakshbandi, Sholakiah Eidgah Imam Farid Uddin Masud, Bangladesh Tarikat Federation chairman Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari, Islamic Oikya Jote chairman Misbahur Rahman Chowdhury, vice-chancellor of Dhaka Alia Madrasa Siraz Uddin Ahmed, among others.
“There is no need to pamper people, who are involved with militant activities. We also have to take strong action against people inciting militancy from behind. The Alem Ulamas will have to take part in the ongoing war against militancy,” said HT Imam.
Giving emphasis on banning Jamaat and its student wing Chhatra Shibir, Mawlana Farid Uddin Masud in his speech said, “It would not be possible to eliminate militancy from the country with these two groups remaining active in politics. The government has to identify and deactivate the financial institutes of Jamaat-Shibir.”
