Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited will sponsor the eight-nation Hero 10th Asia Cup Men’s Hockey’2017 beginning at the Maulana Bhashani National Stadium here on October 11.
IBBL Managing Director and CEO M Abdul Hamid Miah handed over a cheque for Tk 50 lakh to the President of Bangladesh Hockey Federation and Chief of Bangladesh Air Force Air Chief Marshal Abu Esrar at the Bangladesh Air Force Headquarters on Tuesday.
IBBL Deputy Managing Director Abu Reza M Yeahia was also present on the occasion.
Eight leading Asian countries — China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan and hosts Bangladesh — will compete in the prestigious continental hockey tournament returning to Bangladesh for the first time since 1985.
Introduced in 1982, the inaugural Men’s Asia Cup was won by Pakistan, who also won the next two editions in 1985 and 1989. Since then, India (2003, 2007) and Korea (1993, 1999, 2009 and 2013) have become champions out of the nine editions.
India are the top ranked amongst the competing teams at 6th position in the latest FIH Hero World Rankings, while Korea, the current title holders, are ranked 13th.
